Merak Version 8.9 - What’s new?
The key upgrades in version 8.9 are to do with the AntiSpam features. The AntiSpam engine has been redesigned and extended to include the latest technologies and spam fighting techniques.
AntiSpam Improvements
Quarantine
A Quarantine function has been introduced. Messages achieving a pre-selected spam score will be held in a quarantine queue awaiting further action. Quarantined messages can be inspected by the intended recipient or Spam Administrator, who can choose, for each message, to WhiteList the sender, BlackList the sender, deliver the message without Black or Whitelisting, or Delete the message. A message can also be Whitelisted by the Sender if the Challenge Response is enabled and the sender completes the Response process correctly.
Quarantine Reports
A daily email report of quarantined messages can be sent to each user (who is set up for it) showing a list of quarantined messages for that user. Details shown include Subject, From, Date/Time etc.. Each listed message also has a series of clickable links next to it showing what actions can be taken against the message – Whitelist, Deliver, Delete etc. and the user need only click on the link to have the action performed. This allows your users to manage their Quarantine queue by email.
SpamAssassin - RBL (Real-time Blackhole List)
AN RBL function has been added to the SpamAssassin section, allowing you to check incoming messages against a number of RBL resources for an indication of spam.
SpamAssassin – Razor2 Technology
Razor2 is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and filtering network. Spam is reported by users worldwide as it is received and a “signature” of a random part of the message is recorded in the Razor2 database. The signature is regularly re-created using a different random section of the message so spammers can not modify their messages to fool the system. Merak can now check messages against the Razor2 database.
Black and White Listing
Merak now has simplified Black and White List management, allowing you to block, or trust, senders, domains, and IP addresses.
Keywords
Keyword lists are now available as part of both the BlackList and WhiteList functions. WhiteList keywords act like a bypass option for AntiSpam, allowing you to define particular words that your installation will always accept. Blacklist keywords, when found, will cause the spam score to be increased.
Indexing Queues
Indexing queues are now available to help you increase the accuracy of your installations Bayesian Filters and to automate your BlackList and WhiteList email addresses.
Public IMAP folders can be created for:
Genuine messages marked as spam
Spam messages not marked as spam
WhiteList Processing
Blacklist Processing
Messages placed in the “Genuine” folder will be indexed in the Bayesian database as genuine words.
Messages placed in the Spam Folder will be indexed in the Bayesian database as Spam words.
Messages placed in the WhiteList Folder will have the message senders added to the WhiteList.
Messages placed in the BlackList Folder will have the message senders added to the BlackList.
Settings Level
Three optimised levels of Spam Settings are available using a simple drop-down select box. This allows Administrators to quickly set AntiSpam processing to a level of security that can be tweaked as time goes on.
Content
Pre-set Content checks are included. These check for unusual message construction (e.g. HTML part without plain-text part) and will increase the spam score if found.
Logging
AntiSpam logging has been greatly improved, allowing you to see exactly why a message was scored as spam.
Other Improvements
Active Directory Synchronization
Merak can now automatically synchronize with an Active Directory Server, meaning you now only need to update user information in one place – the AD Server – and Merak will mirror the changes.
MDA Queue
MDA (Mail Delivery Agent) Queues have been implemented. Using the MDA queues can be useful for servers performing a lot of AntiSpam and/or AntiVirus processing. Sometimes these high-load servers can take too long to complete their AS and AV processing and the sending server will give up and disconnect. The mail gets delivered normally but the sending server will try again at a later time, causing multiple copies of the same message to be delivered. Enabling the MDA queues causes Merak to accept every message without AS or AV processing but they are stored in queue(s) and are AS and AV processing is performed at a later time. This means that the SMTP process is never delayed and avoids multiple messages being delivered. You can set the number of MDA queues to be used to suit your installation hardware.
Rules and Filters
These have been enhanced to include checking of the spam score, Moving or Copying the message to a folder, Encrypting the message and Setting a priority for the message.
Mail Archive
All your messages can be archived on a scheduled basis.
Log Backup
All of Merak’s logs can be backed up on a scheduled basis.
DB Migration
A simple Database Migration feature is included, allowing you to migrate Merak’s database from one DB technology to another (e.g. MS Access to MySQL).
Enhanced API tool
The API has been improved with new features and options, a re-written help, the ability to remote access to Merak, and a filter function.
